Outer Range Going On Autumn
Autumn's true goals in Outer Range are still unknown, but episodes 5 and 6 reveal an important part of her plans. While she initially presented herself as a poet seeking inspiration, Autumn's journey was actually about the void and Royal's family. While many Outer Range theories help explain who Autumn is, the show still hasn't given a definitive answer. So far, Outer Range has chosen to highlight how differently Royal and Autumn perceive the void. For Josh Brolin's character, the hole in the middle of his ranch is cause for panic, self-doubt, and anguish. For Autumn, the void represents the legitimation of some type of dream or desire for a higher power. It is through this difference in the perception of the void that Outer Range creates an interesting conflict between its two main characters.
Autumn's enthusiasm for the void already indicated that she would not rest until she achieved her goals. Now, Outer Range reveals that Autumn is not working alone. In episode 6, after being kicked out of Royal's land, Autumn found herself with no money and nowhere to go. However, all she had to do was make a phone call to an unrevealed person to quickly receive money and rent a room. For someone who claimed to be a wanderer with nowhere to go, it is curious that Autumn was just a phone call away from getting support. For the first time in Outer Range, it has been proven that Autumn is getting some form of external help and that her actions are either being coordinated with or commanded by someone else.
Although Autumn did not inspire much confidence from the start, until now, it was not possible to say with certainty that she was deceiving the Outer Range characters. However, now that it's been revealed that Autumn has a secret benefactor helping her behind the scenes, it is more than confirmed that she is manipulating Royal, the Abbott family, and the Tillerson family. Gradually, Autumn has been moving the pieces in the city as if it were a game of chess. In episode 6, for example, she threatened to report Royal to the police for Trevor's death, which led to Perry confessing and causing a great deal of turmoil in the family. As for the identity of Autumn's secret benefactor, possibilities abound. It could be some character already featured in Outer Range, such as Patricia or Wayne Tillerson – the latter having a history with Outer Range's void and its time travel. Another possibility is that Autumn's contact is a new character, not yet shown or referenced. Finally, there is also the chance – unlikely but not to be discounted – that Autumn's benefactor is Rebecca, Amy's missing mother. This would be a major plot twist and could add to the theory that Autumn is Amy from the future. Whether Autumn's intentions are good or evil cannot be said, but Outer Range has proved that she cannot be trusted. Right now, Autumn is focusing her actions on three people: Royal, Perry, and Billy – with the void seemly guiding her moves. What the conclusion and the consequences of her plan will be is something that only the final two episodes of Outer Range will be able to reveal.
