Zeus Survive In Thor: Love And Thunder

Comic book Thor: Love and Thunder's Zeus and Greek mythology counterparts, is an ancient being that's almost impossible to destroy. Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor Odinson makes quick work of Zeus by angrily throwing Thunderbolt through the Greek god's heart - but how did Zeus survive this Zeus even takes a huge fall.

Getting sidelined by his own weapon. Yet, somehow, Zeus not only reappears to complain about humans and superheroes, but Russel Crowe's Zeus also seems mostly unharmed in the Thor: Love and Thunder after credits scene. The answer to how Zeus survived in Thor: Love and Thunder lies in how the original Marvel Comics source material portrays Zeus.

Marvel Comics' Zeus is the sixth son of the titan Cronus. Though Marvel's Cronus only banishes and doesn't eat his children, Cronus' wife Rhea also hides that she's pregnant with Zeus, who eventually overthrows Cronus to rule over the Olympians. As Skyfather of the Olympian Gods, Zeus possesses vastly superior versions of the superhuman attributes that come with having the physiology of an Olympian deity. This not only includes invulnerability but also the ability to regenerate missing limbs or even organs faster than any other Olympian.

Thor: Love and Thunder brings a classic comic book adventure to life, and it's absolutely packed with MCU and Marvel Easter eggs and references. Marvel movie is absolutely packed with Easter eggs, and Thor: Love and Thunder is no different. The Thor franchise has had something of a bumpy ride, with both Thor and Thor: The Dark World failing to perform as Marvel hoped. The studio invited Taika Waititi to essentially relaunch the series with Thor: Ragnarok, which proved to be a phenomenal success, grossing over $850 million worldwide and receiving popular and critical acclaim. It was no surprise, therefore, that Marvel Studios brought Waititi back for a fourth movie.

Zeus shrugging off what looked like a lethal blow from Thor in Love and Thunder is a reference to how tough Zeus is in the comics. Unlike the other Thor: Love and Thunder characters, Zeus has zero physical weaknesses, and he takes full advantage of this in the source material. Zeus has withstood a full blast from Galactus and has gotten struck by Mjolnir to no effect. Zeus also gave Hulk the beating of his life, to the point that it disabled Hulk's healing abilities. Thanos even sees Zeus as equal to Galactus and Odin in terms of raw power. This is why Thanos took the more tactical approach of stranding Zeus, Odin, and the other gods in Asgard - even though Thanos already had the Infinity Gauntlet.

Can Anything Kill Russell Crowe's Zeus? Russel Crowe's Zeus from Thor: Love and Thunder was inspired by Marvel Comics, it's possible that Zeus can be killed - but only in a way similar to how Thor dealt with Hela in Thor: Ragnarok. Thor 5 could see Zeus coming face to face with Nyx, a rogue goddess "born within the darkness before creation," whom Zeus imprisoned in ancient times. Following a contest between the Elders of the Universe, Earth gets temporarily removed from its solar orbit, breaking the spell Zeus used to contain Nyx and her children. Nyx slaughters not just Zeus but the entire Greek pantheon. However, Nyx eventually gets defeated by a ragtag superhero team. Because the Olympians are fundamental aspects of reality, they get reincarnated into their "true forms" - as savage warmongers razing planets and demanding tribute under Zeus' leadership. Even if the MCU's Zeus can be killed, he might also just return as a more dangerous version of himself.

Thor: Love and Thunder also hid a solution against Zeus in plain sight: the Guardians of the Galaxy. Though they only had brief roles that didn't really affect the outcome of Thor: Love and Thunder's ending, it is the Guardians who eventually defeat Zeus in the comics. When the Guardians attack the floating city of New Olympus in an attempt to end Zeus' bloody intergalactic rampage, Star-Lord and Moondragon infuse a Black Hole Bullet with their powers and then fire it at Zeus using a Kree Liquid Weapon. Athena - Hercules' half-sister - realizes that the reincarnated Greek gods don't belong in this universe, so she grapples with Zeus to ensure that the bullet hits. Zeus and Athena are consumed by light and disappear, banished into another dimension - at least temporarily.

Thor: Love and Thunder dials everything that worked with Ragnarok up to 11. What's more, it handles MCU continuity rather more effectively, bringing back Natalie Portman's Jane Foster as the Mighty Thor in an arc lifted straight from Jason Aaron's comic book run. This time Portman is no mere damsel in distress, but rather is transformed into a hero in her own right, bringing a rainbow of joy into the MCU and leaving Thor Odinson bewildered as old feelings are reignited. This narrative naturally means continuity is a bit more important to Thor: Love and Thunder than it was with Thor: Ragnarok. What's more, this time Waititi is bringing to life some of the most popular comic book stories of the last decade, and he tries to honor them more. As a result, Thor: Love and Thunder contains a lot more Easter eggs and references.
